A Year in Review: Exploration, Collaboration, and Embracing the Unexpected

Posted by Alain De Repentigny on

As the year draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the whirlwind of exploration, curiosity, and creativity that shaped 2024. From new directions in my work to unexpected detours and fulfilling collaborations, this year has been one of growth, challenges, and remarkable experiences.

At the start of the year, I felt a pull toward a more contemporary direction with my paintings—a departure from my more well-known Yukon landscapes. These new works were deeply personal, developed over years in bursts of inspiration, often created just for myself, without an audience in mind. Taking them to Art San Diego this fall turned out to be one of the year’s greatest personal triumphs. The overwhelmingly positive reception reminded me how important it is to take creative risks. It was a surprisingly personal experience that introduced a new layer to something I thought I knew so well.
The exhibition became even more meaningful when Parseen Gallery, based in California, acquired every piece I brought. Signing with them validated the personal nature of this new direction. It was a humbling and exhilarating moment, reminding me why I create art—to share my thoughts and feelings and to let others connect with it in their own way.
While the year started with paintings, the summer brought me back to sculpture. I had the honor of creating a statue of the locally revered Han Chief Isaac, a project that was a true joy to undertake. This work allowed me to explore the medium of sculpture on a deeper level, marrying form and history in a piece that stands tall as a tribute to heritage and resilience.
What made this project especially sweet was its spirit of collaboration. Sponsored by my friends at M2 Gold Mines and with beautiful metalwork accessories—cane, earrings, and feathers—crafted by my good friend and fellow artist Jake Armstrong, the statue became a collective effort. It reminded me of the power of community, creativity, and friendship. Seeing the statue unveiled at the Tr'ondek Hwech'in Fall General Assembly was a proud moment I will always cherish.
After Art San Diego, my plan was to head directly to Argentina to settle into my studio for the winter. However, life had other plans. A series of unexpected travel snafus rerouted me back to the Yukon for a moment. While unexpected, this detour turned out to be a blessing in disguise. The pause gave me an opportunity to recharge and reconnect with loved ones and the stark beauty of the North in its winter glory, a place that never fails to recharge my creative spirit.

Now, I’m finally in Argentina, with my studio doors open and the full spectrum of light at my disposal. In the Sub Arctic, the lack of yellow sunlight during winter can trick the eye, shifting blues to greens when the light returns. While it’s an interesting challenge, it’s also a battle I’m glad to take a break from. Here, surrounded by warmth and clarity, I feel ready to dive back into my creative process.
I’ve carried many ideas with me throughout the year—studies I started late this summer and ideas waiting to be translated onto canvas. Because of this, the plan moving forward is simple: just paint. Perhaps some sculpting, maybe a mural or two, but for now, it feels like the right time to embrace quiet and focus on art. After a year so full of movement, it’s a luxury to stay put and let the work take shape on its own terms.
This year has been remarkable—full of exploration, collaboration, and moments that stretched me both as an artist and as a person. Yet, despite the accomplishments, there were times I wished for more hours in the day to balance everything I needed to do with the things I wanted to do. Now, as the calendar clears and my obligations are met, I find peace in slowing down. I’m ready to paint, to create, and to let the upcoming year unfold as it will.
As we close out this year, I want to express my heartfelt gratitude for the support and encouragement I’ve received. I hope your holiday season is filled with love, joy, and all the moments that matter most.
Here’s to embracing the unexpected and welcoming a new year full of possibilities. May 2025 bring you curiosity, creativity, and the time to pursue what makes your spirit full.
